But she agreed with you that the film was "artistic". And of course it was a condemnation- she DID NOT like the movie. What was she supposed to say? This was an utterly FANTASTIC movie, but I did not like it?

I have seen almost all the Chinese imports, the Chinese "Art" films- and they are all very beautiful films, but they are all so desperately sad. They aren't as sordid as Kubrick gets (he does tend to wallow a bit in that aspect of humanity) and I suppose they affirm human values by showing us the absence of them- but YUCK. I don't want to see it anymore.

The reason I use "to me", is because I realize that for others certain things might be inspirational or valuable that just didn't work for me. I think theatre, like music and art, is so subjective that I would never presume to say that you are wrong in your perception. BUt it IS your perception, and not an absolute.

Also I was thinking that you seem to have a strong film and art background. Don't you think that having more knowledge enhances your ability to appreciate the film? You already had an appreciation of Kubrick, you like art films, you had certain expectations.

Similarly, when you mention Oedipus or Lear, of course they are "great" plays, but many people will find them boring to watch. I don't think this is a condemnation of the play or the audience. Greek plays really don't stand alone too well- they need a background, some history, some knowledge of theatre in that time, the meaning of tragedy, perhaps familiarity with the vocabulary and the cadences. I love opera, but I have studied voice and music for years, and we've had season tickets for many years. Many educated, bright people can't abide opera and find it stupid and boring.

All I could do was give you my personal reaction to the movie. Perhaps if I were a film buff, a student of the art film or of Kubrick, I would have had a different take. Whether he will be a longterm "great", I don't know-- I don't think anyone does.

It makes me sad to think someone might see and judge our view of life through his eyes only though. How unlikeable all those characters were, how lonely.

Neo, you're gonna "okeydoke" me for this, and I don't savor the prospect, but I disagree that the "for me" qualifier can be ignored. Rambi was clearly stating her preference, and providing some of her rationale for that preference.
How can I say that I really don't like something you deem great - without it being or being construed as personal? I want to know, because I want to hold the confidence that I can voice my honest opinion here without being "okeydoked" or "whatevered" or otherwise judged and found ignorant.

Please don't "okeydoke" anybody here. It causes me pain. This is a place marked Sanctuary. And that includes sanctuary from sarcastic dismissals.
