Driver Runs Over Israelis; 12 Hurt

NACHSHON JUNCTION, Israel (Aug. 10) - A Palestinian man rammed his car into hitchhiking Israeli soldiers during morning rush hour today, injuring 12 before being shot to death by troops. Police said he was on an apparent suicide mission.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility. Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak called the attack ''cowardly.'' The Palestinian Authority said it was studying the incident, but criticized those who opened fire on the driver, saying they acted too quickly.

The attack occurred at Nachshon Junction, a major intersection 30 miles west of Jerusalem. Police said a red Fiat with yellow Israeli license plates struck two soldiers near a hitchhiking post as they were about to cross the street. The car sped away and a police helicopter was called in to chase it. After about 10 minutes, the driver made a U-turn, returned to the junction and plowed into the soldiers, said army spokesman Lt. Col. Sharon Grinker.

One witness, Reuven Gvirts, was riding his bicycle nearby at the time.

''I saw the car hit the soldiers again, including some who were already on the ground,'' said Gvirts, 47. The car dragged some of the injured and then crashed into a large flatbed truck, Gvirts said.

Local police official Shimon Sharvit said police and soldiers opened fire on the Fiat when it approached the second time. Sharvit said the driver was killed before his car hit the truck.

Sharvit said the incident was ''apparently a suicide terror attack.'' Police sealed the area and searched the car for explosives, but found none.

Barak said the attack ''will strengthen our resolve to fight terrorism and the need to cooperate with the Palestinian security services.''

Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat's adviser, Nabil Abourdeineh, said the Palestinian Authority objects to ''indiscriminate shootings ... without confirming first what happened.''

Police said the driver apparently was a resident of the Palestinian town of Bethlehem in the West Bank.

All of the injured were soldiers and police, Sharvit said. Paramedics said one soldier suffered serious injuries and the others were slightly hurt.

In the past, Palestinian militants have several times driven cars into groups of Israelis at hitchhiking posts or bus stops. In response, iron barriers have been set up at some of the country's major intersection to prevent such attacks.

Today's attack came at a time of dispute between Israel and the Palestinians over the implementation of the Wye River land-for-security agreement. Relations between the Palestinians and the Barak government are strained, but both sides have said there is no deadlock.

Militants have carried out suicide bombings and drive-by shootings in Israel in hopes of wrecking interim peace agreements between Israel and the Palestinians.
