>>>What would a shake out have been like? A sudden descent on volume once it was through, before any attempt at recovery?

A sudden drop in stocks below intraday or short/long term support(depending on stock) with a quick surge on volume as limit sell orders are executed in a hurry(set by chart-reading traders/investors just below support), followed by a period of stability(good sign) in the face of light selling with firming bids.

Pick a few leading stocks in strong group(s) and a few lagging stocks in weak group(s) and watch them all day during selloff days.
