Richard,

Aluminum is a product of Bauxite processing.

If you look at the global desposits of Bauxite worldwide, you'll see that we already ARE VULNERABLE in a way that even being Number 1 could not prevent.

Nations have the ultimate control over their resources and should they choose to do so, they can simply nationalize those resources (but not without grievous repercussions with regard to investor confidence in their country).

However, in a pinch, aluminum is a "nice to have" replacement for steel due to its strength and weight advantages. Should we ever lose our access to it, I think most applications would be able to fall back to steel (eg: the automobile industry).

In fact, some folks (like myself) have rued the day that aluminum replaced steel in vehicle manufacturing. I have a $3,500 bodyshop bill that attests to the fact that even a minor fender-bender can result in major damage to an Aluminum, or thin-steel, vehicle.

Regards,

Ron
