Unfortunately I do not feel adding another source of lines is the best move here. Usually the paradigm has to be changed in order to move a huge inertia based telco industry and VoIP is the way I view it. If the cable companies do not refine this offering, they will be forcing themselves into a pricing war for service only and that sounds like a real loser for them considering their service history perception.

OK, Let's look objectively at what Cisco brings to the cable industry from the view of the cable operator

It is my understanding tha BOTH the head-end and modem from
Cisco are DOCSIS certified. In fact, you might find what
Excite@home has to say about the technology amusing--

"Let's look objectively at what Cisco brings to the cable industry from the view of the cable operator. ... Today, not much. Look at their own web page descriptions."

Denver,

Well I couldn't agree with you more. I kind of chuckle when they go on and on about their, "broadband products." They are probably just routers.

But hey, nothing wrong with taking their good old router products, slapping "Cable Router," on them and selling at least(2000 projection) $500,000 worth of products to 10 of the top 12 MSO's in the nation! Someones got to sell to the MSOs. And if CSCO can penetrate that market with some fancy marketing, more power to them <VBG>.

MSO's need the routers and ANTC doesn't have any. Kind of wild that CSCO's MSO router business, roughly matches the entire revenues of everything that ANTC sells to MSOs.

I'm guessing, if CSCO can get their foot in the door with the MSOs with their proven routers, then maybe that will lead to other products. I'm sure this is what they are thinking.

I also agree with you about VoIP over Cable. Chambers is just barking up the wrong tree with that one. I guess it's just the salesman in him that tries to promote something that is just WAY out there. No doubt in 8-10 years, he will be right. But to push VoIP over Cable in mid 1999, makes one chuckle. But you can't blame him because they have no circuit-switched cable telephony products and I'm sure they won't be interested in doing R&D in something he perceives as backwards.

Somewhat on topic, how do you perceive the cable telephony game today. Is ANTC/NT's Cornerstone still number one? For some reason I get the feeling you may be rating TLAB's Cablespan product higher than ADCT's Homeworx product. Am I reading this wrong?
