This is all very interesting, comparing the 'net of the Seventies to today's.

In comparative terms, the 'net of yore was an intranet.

Today's ATHM, in contrast, which "is" an intranet, is being regarded as "the Internet."

Hmm...

>Yes, I think we all know that - the net back then was irrelevant to most people. On rereading I can see the statement "no internet yet" could and should be taken as a misstatement. Please insert "No intent connection from within AOL" or just delete it altogether. <

LOL, I kinda figured that was what you meant but I couldn't resist <g>.

>The point is that AOL from inception was created to attract customers. ATHM seems to have been born to meet a technical
challenge. Going forward does ATHM continue to build a business around that solution?<

Both companies were created to attract customers IMHO, business is business and both Case and TJ were and are looking to profit. AOL simply used the best technology at the time to attract as many people as possible. ATHM is now doing the same thing. I remember telling friends how AOL (at that time it was called Qlink, running on a Commodore64) would absolutely STEAL many of Compuserve's customers away from them and that's exactly what happened. Back then, Compuserve was the online gorilla geared toward business. AOL simply offered more to a broader range of people. Now, AOL is the gorilla from which ATHM will build it's base from and do the same thing that AOL did back then.

All in MHO of course.
