I think it's unlikely that free ISPs will affect AOL that much. I used to use AOL but left it when I got tired of being in a closed loop and had gained sufficient internet experience to brave a regular ISP. I think that AOL has a nitch--a very big nitch--and that is newbies, which is where the internet growth will come from. I put my mom on AOL to get her training wheels--I don't know that she will ever be ready to leave it. Another surprise for me was to walk in Kinko and find them using AOL. But you know with employee turnover and all and with AOL having the lion's share of users, it just makes sense to cut your training costs by using AOL.
