Jim, SGI's recent upside move was due to an upside surprise in earnings primarily due to cost reductions. The downside move was due to SGI's most recent reorg plan that appears to acknowledge their NT program was a failure. Sales for SGI's NT machines was at the very lowest estimates prior to its launch. Rumor has it IBM might buy the newly formed NT unit but you have to ask yourself why since IBM has a very successful NT workstation program. SGI's NT machines were plagued with manufacturing and availability problems plus being burdened with the fact it runs a somewhat proprietary version of NT because of its unique graphics components. SGIs supercomputer business is also languishing. SGI has decided to focus on its Unix server line but even here it remains a 2nd tier vendor in a Unix market that is losing ground both on a rev and units basis vis a vis the NT server market. Hence IMO the reaction of the street.

Rick B. doesn't IMO have the vision SJ had when he came to Apple. It would be interesting to see SGI enter the consumer market since their technical talent is acknowledged as very good but doesn't appear likely. I've looked at it being similar to Apple as turn around but just can't get behind a company focusing on Unix servers, even Linux servers. Rich

"My guess is IBM/MOT is providing a G4 for SJ's Seybold 8/31/99 Keynote which may be a "Wintel work-station" killer."

Interesting. My guess is that if your guess is correct, the app that will be used to highlight the capabilities of the new box will be 2-way, real-time, multipoint, voice, video and data networking.
