John, if for some reason the market were to go down a lot before the Fed meeting a rate hike would indeed become less likely, especially if the Fed were to perceive the market to be in a state of panic. however, i believe that otherwise a 1/4 pt. hike is all but assured - the Fed funds futures say so. and of course it will be accompanied by soothing remarks, allowing the market to rally in earnest once again. two puny rate hikes can not stop a mania...
perhaps we will then get a Y2K related sell-off in late september or october, as the people worried about Y2K start pulling money out of equity funds, just in case.
