Re: intel put a lot of resources into working on chipsets that work with Rambus

AMD isn't using rambus for the same reason that intel is desperately reworking its rambus enabled chipsets - rambus is not, at this time, suitable as a PC memory system. The yields may be high but most of those chips, judging by the behavior of AMD and Intel, are suitable only for the low margin video game business. 40ns rambus parts don't seem to be making it in production volumes. Maybe next summer, maybe next fall, maybe never, certainly not now.

Look at the specs for the cheap and easy to produce alternatives, PC100, ES DRAM, DDR DRAM, VC DRAM. They match or beat rambus performance at a significant cost savings. Why do you think they are so reluctant to release any trace of an indication of what performance benefits result from using the more expensive rambus? Do you seriously believe it's because the numbers are so good? As long as intel could absolutely dominate CPUs and chipsets, that didn't matter. But Intel has had some unprecedented bad luck recently and can't afford to give up any more competitive advantages.
