Glen, the rest of the story:
I start with a disclaimer, meaning I can't vouch 100% for it's accuracy and so corrections are welcome.
What is not 100% clear to me is what equipment the telcos have been using , in what proportion from different vendors, at any particular time. So I am sort of left to guess:
Last year ATT made NN it's preferred networking platform vendor. I guess that happened after the brownout they had at which time they where using CSCO & Ascend? switches. Those must have been bought around 1996, before Armstrong came along when ATT was crawling at $30/share and they got the cheapest product around. My understanding is that a full blown NN-ATM system is more expensive to begin with even though over time you save money. Armstrong came along and quickly saw that ATT needs to be better than all the telcos to succeed, that he needs a better product, and so he picked NN.
Please feel free to make any corrections, additions or deletions. This is how I perceived things,

TA
