MCI-LU service debacle continues:

ISPs say MCI outage could kill businesses

Dozens of small ISPs that rely on MCI WorldCom's data network fear that the company's recent outages will drive them out of business....

...."MCI WorldCom has the Internet's version of the Exxon Valdez on its hands, and they're acting like a few turtles got a little oil on them," Stutz said. "This is about as bad as it could be." ....

....The source of the problem was a software upgrade to the Lucent Technologies hardware that routes data though the networks. Teams of engineers from Lucent, MCI WorldCom, and Bell Labs have been working on finding the source of the problem all week but still haven't isolated the root cause, a Lucent spokeswoman said....

MCI WorldCom glitch puts Chicago e-trading on hold
The Chicago Board of Trade, the largest U.S. derivatives exchange, said the opening of its electronic trading system will be delayed indefinitely because of problems with an MCI WorldCom communications system.

The nature of the problem wasn't specified.

MCI WorldCom said yesterday it was still having problems with its frame-relay network after a week of attempting repairs on Lucent Technologies software. Customers of the No. 2 U.S. long distance phone company lost Internet and email services, and the CBOT's Project A trading system was shut for five days....

MCI faces network failures for eighth day

MCI WorldCom, the No. 2 U.S. long distance telephone company, said its frame-relay data network was experiencing problems for the eighth straight day, as technicians struggled to fix Lucent Technologies software that runs the equipment.

As many as 30 percent of the businesses that use MCI WorldCom's high-speed network to access the Internet and send email have had trouble with these services since late last Thursday. An electronic-trading system at the Chicago Board of Trade that relies on the company's network failed again today.

The problems come at a critical time for MCI WorldCom, which is counting on growth in data and Internet revenue to make up for declining prices for traditional phone calls. The fast-growing frame-relay business provides about $1 billion in annual revenue for MCI WorldCom, though compensating customers angered by the outage could cut into its sales and profit.

MCI WorldCom didn't know when the network would be completely repaired, said spokeswoman Linda Laughlin.

"We're trying to bring customers up as fast as we can," Laughlin said. Technical teams from Lucent and MCI WorldCom are working to address the problems and "they're making quite a bit of progress," she said.

Lucent is "working very closely with MCI to solve the congestion issue, working around the clock," said Bill Price, a Lucent spokesman.
