MS being 'coy' may be over simplifing thier position.

I would imagine that they (including Ballmer) are well aware of Wave ! Based on thier previous strategies they are more likely to sit back a bit and dabble in all of the pay-per-use or rent-an-app solutions encouraging the idea and user acceptance. IMO they don't want to isolate any method and confuse the users (We the users are like sheep to water to them) Waiting for, in thier mind, the perfect time to announce thier preference(s). Most likely will correspond with one or many of thier product lines ready for the masses in such a manner.

The ability to use this distribution method IS ready today but looking at the larger picture of using broadband lines, It will most likely take a few years. Computers & Software take milliseconds to upgrade while hardware Co's, ie GTE, USWEST, Cable companies, take forever in comparison. Microsoft always over estimates time and under estimates money. It is part of thier core philosophy from Mr. Bill. So based on that the decade in reference is more likely to be 5 years or less.

The 'S' curve for a product life (or in this case a paridigm shift) is just starting the curve upwards and we will see immediate rapid growth as we have already started to witness. IMO this trend upwards will take years to complete and flatten out. Excellent for both short term and long term investments. And unless something else comes along to replace this concept with a better one it may never see the down side to the 'S' curve.

So to all -- Don't take an amature approach to valuing a company based on current stock fluctuations (They have little to do with company fundementals and opportunities.)

Do your DD and find out for yourselves if Wave is in the right place with the right product at the right time. Look at the management and see if they have proven exerience to make it happen. Compare the down/up sides to other solutions and see how many marbles are on the side of Wave.

Let the dominos fall !!

Re: Broadband

I think Ballmer's timeframe is more likely.

As someone who's had a cable modem for the past two years, I can attest that "Broadband, the reality" is a lot different from "Broadband, the hype". True, once you've gone broadband you'll never go back to dialups, but the notion that first-generation broadband systems will turn the web into a TV-like medium filled with audio and video is just plain silly. All it does is move the bottleneck and make it painfully obvious how much further the net has to go before it has the capacity to do anything like the level of interactivity that rentable software requires. The first-generation reality is that while you no longer worry about downloading multi-megabyte files, the "web experience" is pretty much the same. There are still plenty of times when SI, for example, seems slow. No problem at the last mile, but that doesn't help speed up the SI servers or the networks between them and the cable surfer.
