Chuckles - re: "The PIII demand is so high that Intel is having to resort to yet another unscheduled price cut on Aug 22."

Intel's yields are constantly improving and their cost is declining further due to higher volumes and associated reduction in depreciation/amortization.

Cutting prices keeps the demand increasing - for a product that is already in demand !

As for price,

600 MHz Pentium /// = $644
550 MHz Pentium /// = $546
500 MHz Pentium /// = $344
450 MHz Pentium /// = $200 (Discontinued - see your favorite YUK Register)

I'd say the "mean" ASP for Pentium ///s is probably around the $400 mark - not too bad for about 50% of the Intel x86 CPU sales !

By the way - did you notice the 26% DROP in AMD's prices from pricewatch.com ?

Here they are :

400 MHz K6-2 = $45 (was $57 2 days ago !)
450 MHz K6-2 = $56 (was $85 2 days ago !)
475 MHz K6-2 = $84 (was $109 2 days ago !)
500 MHz K6-2 = $119(probably still not available !)

400 MHz K6-3 = $103(was $119 2 days ago !)
450 MHz K6-3 = $148(was $169 2 days ago !)
500 MHz K6-3 = $201(was $296 2 days ago !)

Looks like Intel may be dropping prices just to keep up with AMD's deep discounts !

I think it is safe to say that AMD's ASPs will definitely be in the $50 range this quarter !
