Does someone have a reaction to this new product by Novell/Dell? It seems to me that this new caching appliance will compete with NTAP's recently launched caching appliance.

It's possible there is business enough for both, but Dell is a formidable competitor.

Wecome any comments

DS, Hello again! I hope to see you here at the NTAP earnings virtual celebration tomorrow afternoon! That is, of course, if we have something to celebrate!<GGG>

Lehman's recent research report on EMC's purchase of Data General states the following:

"This transaction allows EMC to expedite its entry into midrange storage.
DG's CLARiiON and NUMA architecture are attractive additions to EMC's arsenal.
In addition, CLARiiON will help the company develop a larger presence in
network attached storage.
Also, EMC estimates that this deal will expand the
company's addressable market by 40%, to $50B."

On the clariion website, most to the info focuses on SANs rather than network attached storage.

You have mentioned in a previous post some comments about Data General. Could you elaborate on Data General, the clariion offering and NTAP's status against it(them).

Thanks,

Duncan

> NTAP turned the tables on AUS by developing a unique software

It's interesting that several of the technical people at NTAP themselves worked for Auspex before leaving to start a new company. I wonder wonder if it might be that of Auspex shot itself by failing to embrace or reward new ideas.

DS: Thanks for jumping in...once you get a bit acquainted with the people on the boards, they (we) become an incredible resource to/for one another. So, a sincere thanks.

I do think we're now on the same page re: NTAP royalty status, and yes, EMC is royalty as well. It's a little off topic, but some have observed that EMC+DG is (could become) a threat to NTAP. But I wonder...Compaq + Digital certainly hasn't harmed anyone, unless you include Compaq. DG was struggling to begin with. It might have been a quick way to hire more engineering talent and not much more.

IMO, it'll be a while, 12-18 months before any impact on NTAP is felt.

Also OT: You observe QCOM will be a home run in two years. Does that mean four bases only, or something better? If only four, there may be better alternatives than the Q.
