Governments, including the US government regularly tell lies with statistics. Someone here on SI mentioned something about the PPI last week not properly weighing food and energy costs, which would have increased inflation.

Unless you understand the methods used to create the statistics, you don't know if they are real or not.

For example, the Reagan administration tinkered with the employment statistics to show higher employment. Previously, the more than 1 million people in the military had been overlooked -- they were not counted as being employed or unemployed. The Reagan administration added their numbers to the number of people who were employed, and Presto!, the unemployment rate declined.
