I am laughing my head off. My next step was going to be a spiel about new programs being tested or trying to be set up to assist women with loans in India.

Thanks to both of you for responding to my question. Since yours is the answer I was hoping to hear, I'd like to ask a couple more.
What is the average age for girls to marry in India?
Is gold given to males as gifts at birth or any other time?
Is there any indication of platinum replacing gold as a gift item as we're seeing in some other countries?

It would seem that if girls were that disregarded in the Indian culture as to be left on the streets to die or be forced into prostitution, the law of supply/demand for marriageable girls would take over. This should result in the parents of girls being able to command many gratuities from the groom and his parents. This should make female children a valuable asset! Is there a problem with people being able to marry due to economics?
