Re: "Elmer, They do tend to be lower in cost than CPU's, but quite expensive and capable of good margins since they go everywhere "

Years ago Intel was in the same position AMD is in today. Intel needed Motherboards to put their processors into otherwise there were no processor sales. No chipsets, no Motherboards. Intel couldn't rely on chipset vendors to be there on time so Intel spun their own. Intel first tried to do the design inhouse and contract out the fab assembly and test. The prices were high, the availability was questionable, and the quality levels were terrible so Intel saw no choice but to bring it fully inhouse and the rest is history. AMD will find the same thing. They either do it inhouse or they suffer the consequences. Problem is they will need a dedicated design team and dedicated manufacturing capacity. Those are in short supply.

I keep telling everyone that it is one thing to have an excellent design and quite another to have a successful product. I don't think Athlon will ever be a successful product despite the excellent design.
