I used to have no problem shorting spyders at BrownCo, they let me box 'em no problem. But I use Preferred Trade as my primary now and they don't let me do that (long and short in same acct). I'm always careful to call ahead of time to make sure they understand all the things I want to do before I do something at a critical time. Sometimes it even works and I can actually get 2 or more of their reps to agree on the same thing :-) It's really frustrating w/ these discount brokers. The full service brokerages could use this to their advantage if they had any clue what was going on.
