finally had the chance for extended discussions with Brocade recently to clarify what i wrote previously. as i suspected, BRCD confirmed that they: a) dominate 80 to 85% of the managed switch market b) have unique switch management functionality (relative to Ancor or other competitors) which underlies their market share success, specifically wrt: 1) routing algorithms which allow dynamic "hot" scalability 2) the (unlimited) ability to zone across fabrics - scalability through intelligent cascading - allows "any-to-any" connectivity 3) looplet trunking which allows load sharing between inter-switch links (ISL) and again, NO competitors purportedly have any of this critical functionality. if anyone has evidence of anything to the contrary, please feel free to respond.
