Jets acquire QB Mirer from Packers for draft pick

GREEN BAY, WISCONSIN (TICKER) -- Rick Mirer landed with his fourth team in as many years today as the underachieving quarterback was dealt by the Green Bay Packers to the New York Jets for an undisclosed, future draft pick.

Seemingly concerned by the prospect of Ray Lucas or Scott Zolak backing up Pro Bowler Vinny Testaverde, Jets coach Bill Parcells turned his attention to the 29-year-old Mirer. Parcells witnessed Mirer in action Saturday as the Jets lost to the Packers, 27-16, in the exhibition opener for both teams.

"I'm just trying to create some options. I did a lot of work on him prior to the draft and I thought he was a pretty good player," Parcells said. "He started every game for three years in Seattle but he got into a bad situation in Chicago. I talked to Rick today and I told him I'm going to bring hin in here to compete for the second job."

Known for his scrambling ability, Mirer completed 5-of-12 passes for 63 yards and one interception Saturday. Lucas went 14-of-32 for 143 yards for New York. Zolak did not play.

The second overall pick behind Drew Bledsoe in the 1993 draft, Mirer had a strong first season with the Seattle Seahawks despite throwing 17 interceptions and just 12 touchdowns. He set NFL rookie records for completions with 274, attempts with 486 and yards with 2,833.

But it was all downhill from there for Mirer, whose next three seasons in Seattle were unproductive at best. He was dealt from the Seahawks to the Chicago Bears in February 1997 and had a dismal stay in the Windy City.

Unable to rediscover the form that made him a star at Notre Dame, Mirer was ineffective as he started just three games. He also played in four other contests during the 1997 campaign but threw no touchdowns while getting picked off six times.

The Bears cut Mirer before the start of last season and he signed with the Packers, but never played a game in Green Bay.

Mirer headed into this season hoping to be the backup to two-time MVP Brett Favre after Doug Pederson signed a free agent deal with Philadelphia. Pederson was the backup to Favre last season while Mirer rode the bench as the third-string signal caller.

But Green Bay apparently felt more comfortable with quarterbacks Matt Hasselback and rookie Aaron Brooks backing up Favre, prompting the decision to dump Mirer.
