This is Very important for all concerned about the affects of Y2K:

7-Eleven (suggested motto: "$30,000 Worth of Video Equipment Guarding $30 Worth of Twinkies,") is planning to cash in big-time on Y2K fears. New Year's Eve, says one company spokesman, "could be our biggest selling day ever. We could get 50 million people New Year's Day." This is because the chain is stocking up on stuff Y2K nuts will "need" most -- bottled water, canned goods, flashlights, etc. The store is also putting up promotional signs in December to fuel the Y2K paranoia proclaiming, "Y2K -- Ready 4U!"

This, presumably, is because many 7-Eleven customers don't like big words. A dismayed National Retail Federation spokesperson told a wire service that most retailers and manufacturers don't want to be seen as "fanning the flames of consumer panic."

But for the sake of argument, let's imagine the worst: It's Jan. 1, 2000. Our houses are dark, businesses are in ruins, and we're fighting dogs for food. But it's sure comforting to know -- isn't it -- where you can get a can of Skoal and a Slurpee?

*OT* Many of You have asked and wondered, so here it is. I have not judged you for not preparing.

I would like to make a statement here concerning my innermost feelings about Y2k and its possible impact on society and my family.

First of all, I want to say that my family of 5 has 5,000 gallons of Poland spring water, and enough canned food to last for 6 months. We also have enough firewood to last through the winter in NYC, since we have a fireplace.

I have not withdrawn all my money from the bank or my brokerage accounts. And I refuse to do so. If a major crisis develops and the banks go under, my family and I want to suffer with the rest of the World during this crisis. To be sure, we have transferred 1/3 of our assets into Gold bullion bars and we have a nice stash of cash in our home.

Personally, I hope the Polyannas are right and nothing tragic ensues. I sincerely hope that all the Polyannas have the opportunity to laugh in my face and tell me that I was Insane. My preparation was merely a life insurance policy. I hope nothing bad happens.

I also realize that I have no right to tell people how to prepare or what to do here. I am sincerely hoping for the best. If the worst occurs, my family's will to live would be devastated.

I see no point in building an Ark, like Noah did, as some people on this thread are doing. If the worst case scenario takes place and the grid goes down and many people die from lack of preparation, Life will become less meaningful to me and my family.

I don't think I'd want to live if the World went under and most people died as a result of this crisis.

Bearcub, I read very carefully all the news I post. I'm of moderate nature. I think for myself, believe solely in myself, and above all, LOVE this world which I live in, with my loved ones, with a Passion.</b.

..................................................................

Now, I'm confused..........

rarebird, there was no sermon there. i just found your FSIS url link fascinating because it stated that Ag. Department was more interested in communicating with the Department of Defense about food shortages impacted by y2k than say, the Federal Land Bureau membership, made up mostly of decent hardworking agrarian folks who GROW the food in this country.

i don't know how you took that wry observation on my part, taken directly from their official position paper on y2k and food as a sermon or a lecture. do you have me mixed up with someone else?

i wish nothing but the best for you and your loved ones as well, which i have stated both publically and privately. nothing has changed.
