BTW -- Ticketmaster doesn't carry all the shows. If you see something you like (I'd recommend that NY Today site for a complete listing of shows), just call the theater to ask which online company sells tix. I've used Ticketmaster Online several times, and it's a very good, reliable service (in spite of its ripoff service charges)...

For someone who is not real particular about which play you see in NYC, I would recommend going to the half-price ticket booth (one at Times Square and one at the World Trade Center). They usually have a very good selection of plays to choose from, although they do not generally include the current hot hits. I have bought tickets there on numerous occasions and have never been unhappy. Oftentimes they have premium seats available at half price. Here is a sampling of what they have on sale this week:
