You are so terribly confused- you think the people you know, and their recollections mean something in a policy context? For one thing memories are often colored by nostalgia. For another a "free thinker" such as yourself who doesn't like religion wouldn't be much "looked out for" back in the "old days" - some people got looked out for, some didn't- an arbitrary and cruel system.

Further, it was awful if you were in a slum- because people could not look out for each other, they had nothing to share. Your great aunt and step-father are hardly universal examples- are they Terry? And they probably didn't live in a slum did they? What was their socioeconomic status during the depression? Some people had a pretty easy time during the depression- some of my relatives did, since they were on farms in KY and were fairly self sufficient. But other relatives, poor ones, living in the cities, had a horrible time. I would never argue that policy in the US should be a certain way based on my RELATIVES oral history. That is just stupid. You need census data, health data, education data, criminal statistics, you need to account for the much more racially and ethnically diverse population now, you need to account for greater population density, less agrarian population (thus more at the mercy of employers)- there are a so many variables I can't even list them all. And the US being "better" what the hell does that even mean? Better how?
