Have you ever been on a lake that was making ice? Like standing there on 10 inches of new ice just fishing in your drilled hole and have a crack starting at one shore and going between your feet to the far shore? It's a cracking/ripping sound. Perfectly safe except for your undies.

Yes, actually I've paddled on water that is just starting to freeze but is at that point that is somewhere between liquid and ice. That is when the water droplets falling from your paddle hit the surface and dance like mercury on a mirror. Your canoe makes this tingling sounds like glass being crushed as the bow cuts through the water. Late fall is a beautiful time to paddle... just don't ever end up in the water....;-}>
