S.R. Nathan is Singapore's new President JPR,looks like one your Tamil boys is the new President of Singapore. ==========================tribuneindia.com SINGAPORE, Aug 18 (AP) ? Amid a public debate over the role of the president, a little-known diplomat of Indian origin, Mr S.R. Nathan, was today elected Singapore's new President. Mr Nathan is the second Singaporean of ethnic Indian origin to serve as President of the city-state, whose population is about 77 per cent ethnic Chinese. There was no voting as Nathan (75) was the only presidential candidate to have passed government criteria, such as high-level administrative experience. He was supported by Singapore's powerful leader Lee Kuan Yew and other officials. Mr Nathan said Mr Lee (75) had approached him to consider running. Wearing a garland of flowers around his neck, Mr Nathan said he was "humbled" by becoming President. The fact that he was unopposed "places on me an even heavier responsibility to discharge my duties", he told a crowd of about 500 supporters standing in the sweltering heat outside the nomination centre. "I would like to thank all those who have stood by me ... I am in your debt", Mr Nathan said. "I will not betray your trust", he said, adding he would like to thank those who have endorsed his candidacy. Mr Nathan is the second elected President since Singapore's constitution was changed in 1992. Before that the city-state of 3.2 million had a succession of four appointed Presidents. Mr Nathan's election came amid a political and public debate over what exactly constitutes presidential duties. Under the constitution, the President has limited responsibility over civil service appointments, government and statutory board budgets. Mr Nathan has portrayed himself as a man of the people. He has been married 40 years and has a son, daughter and three grandchildren. In 1974, Mr Nathan was part of a commando unit that overpowered armed terrorists who hijacked a ship in Singapore waters. He was awarded a meritorious service medal for his role. After spending most of the 70s in the Singapore's intelligence service, he was asked to head The Straits Times group, Singapore's government-controlled newspaper monopoly, in 1982. Between 1990 and 1996 Mr Nathan served as Singapore's ambassador to the USA. He has recently headed the Institute of Defence and Strategic Studies, a Singapore think-tank. Nathan will be sworn in to take over from President Ong Teng Cheong, on September 1.
