a lot of the "values" controversies have to do with a concern about "social ecology", and the extent to which society can be thrown out of balance by the rapid alteration of settled institutions or disrespect for so many matters that are sacred to many.....

When those who find matters sacred try to impose those matters on those who do not, it is perfectly reasonable for the latter group to resist. Institutions and values are not altered by executive fiat; they change when they no longer suit the requirements of the people they are supposed to serve. The influence of churches has not declined because government is against churches, it has declined because the message that churches bring no longer appeals to the people.

Similar arguments used to be put forth to support the retention of monarchies, which many - especially the monarchs - held sacred. What is sacred to one can be oppressive to another.
