Article on the FPGA with ASIC chip versus ASIC with FPGA chip debate. The two most significant quotes are the following:

Those sentiments (that ASIC chips with embedded FPGA will prevail) echo comments by Cisco Systems Inc. engineering manager Bill Harris, who said at FPGA '99 that his company needs ASICs more than programmable logic.

In addition, PLD companies must amass cores and SoC expertise while ASIC companies have the simpler task of absorbing FPGA capabilities.
"Not to minimize that, but [programmable logic] is more easily acquirable," Selburn said. "The PLD companies are just kind of floundering with this, and it's going to be more difficult for them to approach the SoC market."

LSI Logic and NCR Corporation Team to Set New Data Warehousing
Performance Standard

WICHITA, Kan., Aug. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- LSI Logic Storage Systems, Inc., a leading
supplier of scalable storage solutions for the enterprise, today announced that its storage was a
key factor in helping NCR Corporation set a precedent for the first-ever TPC-R data
warehouse performance benchmark. The new benchmark, which was developed by the
Transaction Processing Performance Council (TPC), measures the performance of common
data warehousing activities with multiple, concurrent users submitting complex queries.

"We are very excited to be a part of this unprecedented achievement," said Mitch Seigle,
director of OEM Sales and Marketing, LSI Logic Storage Systems, Inc. "Our superior fourth
generation storage arrays and NCR's WorldMark servers with Teradata, combine to create one
of the world's most powerful foundations for data warehousing. This is evidenced by NCR's
continued leadership in TPC benchmark results."

As the number of data warehousing users explodes and the size and complexity of queries
grow exponentially, it is becoming increasingly important for organizations to implement data
warehousing solutions that are both reliable and high in performance. Globalization of
business operations has made these requirements even more critical, with queries needing to
be processed on demand. To address these concerns, LSI Logic has worked in partnership
with NCR to develop the new WorldMark Enterprise Storage system, uniquely engineered for
Teradata and designed to deliver the high availability and performance demanded by today's
Teradata Warehouse customer.

"The new WorldMark Enterprise Storage, powered by LSI Logic, provides the superior
performance and reliability that NCR Teradata Warehouse customers have come to expect,"
said Dale Hazel, Product Management Vice President for NCR's Data Warehouse Solutions
Division. "Our close relationship with LSI Logic has enabled us to deliver this new tightly
integrated storage product designed specifically for high performance operation within the
Teradata Warehouse."

The precedent-setting configuration for the new benchmark included the NCR WorldMark
5200 MPP (massively parallel processing) server, NCR's flagship Teradata database and their
WorldMark Enterprise Storage utilizing all-new scalable quad-channel modular arrays from
LSI Logic. The new array incorporates LSI Logic advanced fourth generation controller
technology supplying four times the I/O bandwidth of previous record-breaking solutions.
