That "Jaws" item is not as trivial as you might think. What was shocking about Jaws was not just the shark himself, even though he did spoil our swimming outings off our sailboat. We would jump into the water, start paddling about happily, and then one of the kids (inevitably!) would yell "Jaws!" and, despite ourselves, we would all panic and scramble back into the boat, hearts pounding... But I digress. What was really shocking about "Jaws" was that, a child was among the first victims. You remember that little boy on the beach, who gets gobbled up? Well, that broke a long-standing taboo. In the horror movie tradition, children were often threatened by The Monster, but some Responsible Adult always stepped in to save the child (often losing his own life in the process). The underlying message was reassuring for children (who constituted the main audience for such films): there are scary things out there, but Mom or Dad or Your Teacher or The Policeman or whoever will protect you. "Jaws" opened the floodgates. In ensuing years, we have been treated to an endless number of films in which children are often the principal victims (e.g., the Halloween, Friday the 13th series), or even the principal perpetrators (e.g., that Antichrist thing). I remember once, back in the '70's, my husband and I took two little boys (my youngest son & a friend of his) to see what we thought was going to be a nice old-fashioned haunted house movie. Well, it was a haunted-house movie, but hardly an old-fashioned one. Seems the house is possessed by an evil spirit, which then possesses the mother (a cross-eyed Karen Black), who then proceeds to try to kill off her little boy, by remote control. First, the swimming pool almost drowns him; then a lamp in his room starts a fire; and finally, he is blown out of the window, lands on the top of the car his father is trying to escape in, his face smashes into the windshield, and you can see his blood gushing all over the place.. Well, the kids were traumatized. My son had nightmares for weeks afterwards (and he was no "sissy" type). So, not only will Mom and Dad not protect you. They also may try to kill you themselves! Some cultural divide... Joan
