What a nice story about your Mom. It's good to remember that life here on earth is fleeting, and that we should all take the time to help to lift others when they fall. When this first happened, it was like my brain flipped a switch. After watching and hoping they would find JFK, Jr., and his wife and sister-in-law, I felt like I really couldn't handle more tragedy so soon. This being, of course, of such greater magnitude. CNN is my default page (I never seem to be able to watch the news on TV), and every time I logged on I was bombarded with photographs. It took a few days, but I took a deep breath and began to really read instead of just scanning the headlines. It is hard to conceptualize what has happened, and I don't think any of us can imagine what these victims and survivors have experienced during this tragedy. I keep seeing images of the people I saw during my visit there, women who were meek and demure, devoted mothers. Men who were open and friendly, and children who were beautiful and full of life, like children everywhere. The Turkish economy is fragile, and the infrastructure surrounding this area has been badly damaged. Bridges are collapsing, and they are having difficulty getting supplies in. They are concerned about compromised foundations of the buildings left standing, and future aftershocks. People are afraid to sleep indoors. There are no toilets and running water, and the risk of disease is very high. Everyday people are trying to sift through tons of concrete in hopes of finding their family or friends alive. For those (like me) that flipped a switch when this first happened, here is a good, up-to-date and informative article on this very sad event. They now think the death toll may surpass 40,000.disasterrelief.org With regards to donations, they answer the phone promptly if you call, and I got my tax deduction receipt in the mail right away the last time I donated this way. Here's the number: 1-800-HELP-NOW. You can let them know you are calling to donate to the crisis in Turkey. I'm really happy that we're all doing well enough at trading/investing to still be here. A tribute to the solid effort we've had from a group of amazing and wonderful people. Jean 2MAR$, I commend you on your generous donation. As a true believer in Karma, I hope you receive an equally generous piece of good luck!!
