Hi, Ike. Here's a Bloomberg piece that neatly wraps all the recent and expected fundamentals...recent economic news, positions of dealers on fed move to increase fed funds rate 25 bp and a possible hike of the discount rate with neutral bias.

bloomberg.com

Q2 gdp growth out Thursday expected to be down from estimate to 2 percent. I like you thought the lower gdp news was more major than the wage hike.

Best regards,
Nancy

Reduction of Consumption

Infotech consumption specifically ERP sector, and probably beyond
services price down 35-45%
orders down 50%
trend since Sept '98 and finally 'obvious' this month, imho

this is corporate consumption
multiplier effect could take up to 6 months due to savings
and will impact greatly personal consumption figures
we are talking people who average $120US/hr on 50 hr weeks, i think

INDIA
UK
CANADA
are now NET 'NEUTRAL' infotech people importers
in other words, people are going home, can't find work in US
AND
may have signigicant difficulty in finding work when returning

i mention this with respect to your astute observation about needing new tools in the new economy

sometimes eardrums and eyeballs do ok ;)

regards
ynot ;)
