Unfortunately, I think he started with a conclusion, and was arguing for a conclusion that none of the rest of us had reached, because it was a conclusion not justified by the arguments or facts presented.

Hi Steven --

There are all kinds of reasons soldiers put it all on the line.

Some of these involve the joining up phase (patriotism, rite of passage, family tradition, personal opportunity and conscription). Threat to homeland and family a very big motivator in this phase.

On the battlefield it generally boils down a bit. Fight to stay alive and duty (this usually embodied in small unit bonding and a strong desire to not let down, or be seen to be letting down your squad, platoon, wingman, whatever).

Never heard of a soldier in any war holding a lapful of wet red guts saying,: well, I'm really glad I did this for Uncle Joe and the rest of the folks in the old home town.

Books full of reasons why morale differs in different wars.
Most who went to Vietnam were damn good soldiers and are normal successful people today. The strung out, ***ed up loser vet is a real guy with real problems but he is the exception.

I don't see the comparison as strained at all. I was stating a view that there may be bigger sacrifices than having sex forced on you -- losing you life, for one. Soldiers been making that sacrifice a long while.

Your last paragraph is EXACTLY what I tried to establish.
No one came forward with anything specific re. the non human species facing extinction. Provocative as the eventual question was, it was not the intended question -- hardly the same subject.

I trust you found nothing insulting or offensive in this post. Foolish, of course, is always a possibility.
