chalu2, it was not an important issue for me 5 years ago but now it is, because I feel the tail is wagging the dog and the republican far right is demanding all this legislation like parental approval and PBA restrictions... little things that chip away at a womans right to choose. PBAs are a classic example of this. No woman ever would choose to have a PBA, you've got to be kidding. Most had never heard of that procedure before this firestorm erupted in congress about it... the far right digs up these extreme things every month it seems.

Arlen Spector said on a political show once that the republican leadership no longer will support anybody that supports a woman's right to choose. He is pro-choice but cannot get any support to run for president due to this issue. I can tell you until the last few years there were tons, tons of pro-choice republicans in California (the mayor of LA is one) but the strong-arming by the leadership has driven them to change their positions, its their only choice.

So you are correct, I doubt I can ever vote for a republican again, and I probably won't, but I will keep looking for somebody that is willing to stand up to these extremist bullies like Delay and when somebody comes along, they will score with me for character and the issues both.

<< I'm not sure this is a sexist thing (as there are many Republican women who don't support Roe v. Wade) >>

While I don't think that we can totally rule out the sexism in the anti abortion movement, there is a more ominous threat, that of women allowing politicians to control their right to have or not have children.

This is big government stepping in and removing women's individual rights and their rights to privacy.

Doesn't scare you?

It reminds me of the old story of a non Jew during the Holocaust, that goes something like this:

- First they came for the Jews. I was not Jewish so I didn't protest or worry.

- Then they came for the Gypsies. I was not a Gypsy so I didn't protest or worry.

- Then they came for the handicapped. I was not handicapped so I didn't protest or worry.

- Then they came for me. There was nobody left to protest or worry for me.

It goes something like that. Anyone have the correct text?

The point being, once big government can step into our lives and take away a very important and individual right from a sector of our society, as history shows, it will not stop there!
