I've seen exciteextreme. Even as a "proof of concept" it strikes me as pretty weak.

I went to a lecture recently where Microsoft people gave a long report on their research into methods of broadband web presentation for search engine results.

Impressive research.

They had all kinds of groups tested using different methods of display.

The conclusion was that a overwhelming majority (of all types of poeple) wanted these new broadband methods of interacting. The most likely final outcome is having your cursor "fly" through space, like a lot of video games do, and the stars in the universe are topics (clustered around a theme). As you approach a star, you see the subtopics and you can fly into them or click on any topic along the way. Excite is the first to muck with this idea.

It is only the beginning but there is good research that says this is the way people want to go.

Of course if you prefer to stay with the old system of reading your way through hundreds of url descriptions you can do that.

I'm surprised you feel a programmer can whip that whole presentation together in just 20 hours.

7 months and counting... Where are the apps? More importantly where is the "buzz"?

Er, Eric..., the merger was finalized May 28th, 1999-less than 3 months ago.

Regarding: <I've seen exciteextreme. I find it "cute". Looks like a sharp programmer could have slapped it together in a couple of days. Even as a "proof of concept" it strikes me as pretty weak.>

The early DOS upgrades looked like they could be "slapped" together in a couple of days... even at that time. Why didn't IBM step forward and blow Microsoft out of the water when they had the chance ? ... because they didn't have the vision.

The deciding factor is more a variable of who gets there first, than it is of quality. Bill Gates grasped that, whereas Steve Jobs didn't... the rest is a history that was repeated again with the old online services and AOL.

AOL is living in the past... ATHM is living tomorrow... where will you be tomorrow ?
