The deciding factor is more a variable of who gets there first, than it is of quality. Bill Gates grasped that, whereas Steve Jobs didn't... the rest is a history that was repeated again with the old online services and AOL.

Why is it that everyone forgets that AOL was a latecomer to the online services business?

The winner is something more complex than "first". It is most definitely not "best".

The winner is the one that grabs the public mood as the "one". The mass of people in their hearts want to migrate to a single "standard" that defines the experience. Most dont even know that a PC could run without Windows. AOL is the internet to many.

@home has the chance to grab the same position for broadband in a way that noone else can. Just being the biggest broadband provider will be a failure. They need to be broadband. I've thought they had the vision, but they will never get there without a damn impressive showing from Excite. Lets just say I'm starting to get tired of waiting to see what Excite has up its sleeve.
