James I really do not know but I think most experience something. The interpretation of the experience is colored by the concepts of the individual. I was in a coma for 7 weeks and the only thing familiar I had heard of was the bright lights I saw. I think this was caused by operating room lights and flashing a light in my eyes while I was unconscious. I had weird thoughts about them brainwashing me with those lights and subconsciously called for my son who is sharp in electronics to come rescue me. I wasn't aware of this but was told later. I had lung failure, kidney failure and they catherized my heart during the operation but as far as I know my heart never stopped beating when my lungs failed. It's hard to find out much afterwards because nobody wants to talk about it. They said it was horrible with all the machines keeping me alive and seeing a torso with the legs gone. They pulled the machines for me to die and funeral was arranged with undertaker and lodge master.

I came out of the coma and they started more medicine and tube feeding again. They continued dialysis for several more weeks and then I wore a catheter for a year til my kidneys started working again.

I felt I lived a similar experience with Job. Like Job I have never given up and have accomplished minor miracles since. The experience never changed one iota of my personal relation with God. It was strong before and continues strong after 14 years and many diagnosis of doctors that said I wouldn't last long.

I came back from having my heart stopped for 6 hours. I remember a bright light overhead (most surgeons prefer to operate in light). I didn't get to talk to god.
