I have certainly never lied about my educational experience in any capacity. You would trivialize this kind of behaviour as some kind of minor social faux pas. Maybe you are accustomed to others lying in their Curriculum Vitae. But whatever else you call it, it is lying for personal advancement. As a matter of degree that is pretty serious.

Mark, you will find that while most people take all the info the receive and weigh it in the totality of the circumstances and then act accordingly, he/she/it does not want to allow that process to occur. He/she/it will tell you what to think and when to think it. If you reject that premise, then obviously you are blinded by unclean motives ... Whatever ...
