Betty --

No, the broker needs a Class 3 license to be peddling commodities and his commish should be the same per contact for all items.

I dunno, sugar is a good mover, so it would entail perhaps more trades to take profit and get out faster with losses, so that alone will mean more commish to him .... the more trades, the more money.

Sugar is controlled (not necessarily bad) by a few, maybe 5 large and 10 somewhat smaller, buyers who NEED the product. These buyers use sugar, they're not just speculating to make money as the sole reason for trading. I am not suggesting ANY collusion, but common sense tells me it is similar to Ford and GM and Chrylser .. they all know a great deal about the needs, usage, and prices of the others ..... so if the big 5 ain't playing in the sugar market for a few days, one can dang well tell when they start ...... hehehehe... and the little guy will get chewed up and spat out.....
of course, this is all MY opinion and I've not been known to be very smart.....

The main motivation of most newcomers into the commodity market is leveraged money ..... a little can become a lot ... but on the other hand a little can become nada very easily and quickly too ...
and
there is always the risk exposure which exceeds the margin and maint moneys demanded up front by the broker ....
betcha your buddy didn't have that part explained nearly as well as the get rich part ........ hehehehe

Good to see ya, gal ....
