I doubt we'll really know (if ever) until there are more controlled tests done.

I'd rather see a comparison to a one or two processor server than 8-way vs. 4-way. There have been some appalling configurations of 4-way NT servers presented in the past. I'm suspicious of the 8-way more than doubling performance of the 4-way on 2000. I don't doubt that's what was observed, but it may that they never had the opportunity to compare equivalent systems. (eg W2k beta 1 on the 4-way vs W2k RC1 on the 8-way if that was what was available when each system was set up)
