James Diller, Chairman of the Board, founded Sierra Semiconductor in the early 1980s and Haresh Patel, one of PMC-Sierra's VP, was also an officer of Sierra Semiconductor. Sierra Semiconductor was a successful ($240 million in revenues in 1995-6) and profitable company, or it wouldn't have been able to buy out PMC. Also, the volume of wafers that Sierra Semiconductor products used allowed for strong relationships with Taiwanese foundries that then could be shifted towards the higher margin products in broadband/networking.

To say that the decisions of "the old Sierra" never contributed to the eventual success of PMCS is pretty short sighted.
