Of course you can run an older distribution just fine. I have a 486-80 which runs an early version of Slackware and a kernel < 1.0.

The context of the discussion was installing Win98 vs Linux on a 386. A fair comparison with the latest consumer version of Windows would be the latest consumer version of Linux.

I'm trying to use my 486-75 as a Internet gateway/dialer/ip masq machine and it's just barely getting along.
