hey duff,

i had a similar problem, except it was continually scanning via norton software. i tried a number of things and what finally stopped the restarting was this solution:

"The AUTOEXEC.BAT or CONFIG.SYS file is
loading variables that interfere with some 16-bit programs
Follow these steps to rename the CONFIG.SYS and
AUTOEXEC.BAT files:

1. Click the Start button, and choose Shut Down.
2. Select "Restart the computer in MS-DOS mode" and click
OK.
3. At the DOS prompt, type:

CD\ [Enter]
REN CONFIG.SYS CONFIG.ABC [Enter]
REN AUTOEXEC.BAT AUTOEXEC.ABC [Enter]

4. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart the computer."

after making the above adjustment on my other machine, there have been no problems, including anything possibly related to the change i made. i was ready to put it right back if it messed anything else up. so i feel confident suggesting this remedy to you. it came from the symantec knowledge base.

as wily says, usual disclaimer. <g3>

let me know if it worked. you can also try going to this site:

I noticed this happening to me when I had a screen saver running. Also I heard that some antivirus programs run in the background. If you have either of those running, turn them off and try again.

Turn off everything in the tray, especially anti-virus software. If you don't, the scan will restart everytime some background program writes to the registry (which happens all of the time).

Shut everything down, including screensaver and have scan disk as your only running program.

Duff,

Under normal conditions you shouldn't have to use the "thorough" mode of scandisk. Standard is MUCH faster and does what you need it to. You still have to turn off that background stuff though.

Richard and PW: right? Thorough mode scans for physical errors which are very uncommon nowadays.

Hi Duff,

I would recommend before you start Scandisk, you should close any open programs.

Secondly, hit <CTRL>+<ALT>+<DEL> to bring up the Task Manager, and end every process except Explorer and Systray. Chances are you have many programs running in the background such as Iomega drive scannners, anti-virus programs, power management, etc. Shutting these processes down ensures reliability when running Scandisk.

Be sure to restart the computer when Scandisk is complete to bring your system back to a 'normal' state.
