Part of the reason why Com21 is chosen as one of the top 2 to provide Euromodem Consortium is below: The technique of the EuroModem is based on the ETSI standard ETS 300 800. Two different types of EuroModem devices are defined: (1) The class A EuroModem is the basic version mainly used for high speed Internet access. Its functionality is similar to the functionality of a DOCSIS 1.0-compliant modem. Using a class A EuroModem a secure data transmission is possible due to the defined encryption technique. (2) The class B EuroModem is the enhanced version supporting some additional features. For instance it is possible to deliver high-quality telephony services such as PSTN or ISDN connections or IP telephony with a guaranteed quality-of-service level. A common telephony interface allows to connect a telephone device directly to the class B EuroModem. Its functionality is similar to the functionality of future DOCSIS 1.1-compliant modems that - according to CableLabs US - will be available next year. However, in comparison with DOCSIS, the first version of EuroModem will already support all features demanded by cable operators at the moment.
