I think this post is what started the debate on SMS....

Message 11062505

The excerpt that I took from the article stated that CDMA only supports receiving text messages NOT sending them. Can anyone currently send a short message from their CDMA phone to another CDMA phone? This is what I was reffering to when I stated that SMS has not taken off in the US. This is supposedly a pretty valuable function in Finland (per the Wired article).

If I understand engineer correctly, the CDMA carriers chose not to support SMS messaging due to the fact that the channel which supports it was likely to be overloaded. However when PCS finishes setting up their network with 3com (IWF?), they could handle a text message just like any other packet (both receiving and sending).

I guess we'll find out when PCS actually rolls out their network....

You have ONE WAY SMS, but I would suspect that you DO NOT have two way SMS...

Michael, Slacker, engineer, thanks for responding and the ensuing conversation, I have a clearer picture now: SMS vs instant messaging, and the prospects for instant messaging via a closer tie-in with the 'net going forward.

SMS (responding to Michael)

Add Bell Atlantic Mobile to the list. I've been using SMS on Bell Atlantic and
SprintPCS for over a year now. I get real time quotes sent to me hourly,...

What you have here is 'SMS - Cell Broadcast', not 'SMS' per se.
One way SMS, as engineer puts it.

A full SMS implementation allows a handset to transmit short messages (up to 160 characters).
