At 12 cm across, the disk compares in size to CDs and DVDs, but can hold 40 times the data of a DVD . The semi-transparent disk holds 200 gigabytes as compared to the 4.7 gigabytes of a DVD . The group says it will work with four companies including Sharp <6753> to continue R&D with the aim of producing a commercial version of the technology. They plan to have a test system ready within two to three years and to announce their breakthrough next month at a technical conference in Kobe.
