Brazil to Begin Testing DTV Standards
8/26/99 In what could be the biggest test yet for the standards battle between ATSC and DVB, Brazil has announced it will begin official HDTV testing shortly.

Tests will begin by the end of August in Sao Paulo and will be conducted based on norms established by Anatel, the country?s telecommunications regulator. The tests, which are expected to be complete by the end of 1999, will take place in two phases?an initial set-up in at laboratory at a Sao Paulo university followed in October by field tests with 17 TV broadcasting stations authorized by Anatel. Engineers and specialists from the Fundacao CPqD, (Center will monitor the tests for Research and Development).

ATSC chairman Robert Graves has expressed confidence that Brazil will choose the ATSC standard based on his impressions of Brazilian?s enthusiasm for HDTV, which he says is easier to integrate with the ATSC standard.

?Brazilians are very enthusiastic about HDTV,? Grave says. ?They favor ATSC because HDTV is the centerpiece application?they are biased in our favor.?
