Good points. But you see, in today's India, that is Bhaarat, unless you agree with the right-wing nutcases, you are not a patriot! You will be dubbed as a Communist and a CIA agent in the same breath. Btw, whatever happened to the following "prestigious" defense project? Is it yet another case of sending crores of rupees down the drain before settling for some junk stuff from Russia?! ------------------------------------------------------------ INDIA TO DESIGN NEW MILITARY TRANSPORT AIRCRAFT BANGALORE, June 24 (PTI) Pooling together the spin-offs from the country`s ongoing missile, copter and space projects and expertise of light combat aircraft (LCA), India is planning to embark on a new prestigious mega project to design a world class medium transport aircraft for military requirements. The project divided into three, to design three different versions with the same wing size, will have the first version planned exclusively for cargo transport designed to carry 13.5 tonnes payload, the second would be a passenger aircraft which will carry 120 passengers, and the third a multi-role transport aircraft, which would carry up to 10 tonnes of cargo and 80 passengers.Conceived by the Aeronautical Developmental Agency (ADA), engaged in the design of LCA, the idea has been debated upon in various fora of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). The idea has been finalised to develop an aircraft incorporating expertise from various aeronautical projects of DRDO and also copter projects of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited and the space programme. However, it has not been decided whether to set up a nodal agency for the handling of the project or if ADA would be asked to take it up as a second project after the LCA. The project is conceived to meet future requirements of the Indian forces, says Dr Kota Harinarayana, programme director of LCA. Awaiting the green signal from the Union government, it would be completed in less than seven years from the time of getting the go-ahead. Preliminary studies of the project are being carried out at ADA laborataries. These include computer simulations, wind tunnel studies and mathematical modelling, says Dr Harinarayana. CIVIL VERSION: He says after the successful completion of the military version, a civil version of the aircraft would also be designed with some modifications, which could replace the Boeing-757 aircraft of the Indian passenger fleet. He put the total outlay expected for the project at Rs.3,000 crore. The aircraft will have a maximum take-off weight of 48.25 tonnes and could fly with the full payload upto 3,000 km at a stretch. It would have a cruise speed of 0.76 Mach, which is three fourth the speed of sound. To achieve the cruise speed of 0.76 Mach, it has been planned to use composite materials developed for LCA and some advanced alloys extensively in the body and wings of the aircraft. In its avionics part, it would have Arinc 629 bus and integrated avionics. It will be equipped with a version of the fly-by-wire flight control system, developed by the Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE) along with the American Martin Marietta Company for LCA.Another advanced feature of the aircraft is that the high speed global positioning system being developed by the Centre for Airborne Systems (CABS) will be employed for precision landing and navigation. Besides, the wing would be designed as aeroelastic. With the LCA project entering its last phase with the first flight of the aircraft scheduled for early next year, the ADA laboratories have completed their work with regard to the LCA and are expected to swing into action for the design of a new aircraft.
