Scott,

I had my computer built up by a local specialist, who also supplies unlimited back up for 3 years and various warranties.

·Arbour Midtower ATX - 235 Watt power supply
·Microstar Socket Seven Motherboard
·AMD K-6-2-400MHz with 3DNOW processor with big fan
·64MB SDRAM PC100 DIMM 68PIN RAM
·Seagate 8.4 GB IDE Hard Drive - [You may want more]
·ATI Expert 98 8MB SGRAM AGP Video Cards - 2 screens
·Internal Trav-4 4/8 GB IDE Backup
·USR/3com 56k PCI Modem
·Plus floppy, cd, sound card, etc

You shouldn't pay more then $1,300-1,500
Hope this is useful?

Chip

Scott ---

Didn't totally forget you and your two requests ...

I left you off my answer list til I had a chance to do some checking and I can find nothing concerning the Japanese translation thing.
The last email I got from you was only three days ago and there was nothing like that there.
Perhaps it is one of your "strange friends" who is pulling your leg ..... you do have some strange friends, do you not ?
should you not have ..... I have some I will loan you even tho I wouldn't loan you any bullets the other day.......
Better yet, I'll GIVE you some ...... like the soda water bottles .. no deposit no return.

And with the HD ...
I really like WD, even tho you and your dad both lost them nearly at the same time.
In the machines that I'm very familiar with and have had my hands on or at least my eyeballs on ... appx 300 boxes ... WD and Seagate have been the most reliable with the fewest problems.
All in all, the HD itself has been the least troublesome hardware area when you consider the use factor.

Now, one factor which comes into play with my experience is that most HDs, in the boxes I have anything to do with, are replaced in normally three years due to size limitations .... of the ones in my house and in Marilyn's office ... there are only 3 machines out of 15 with HDs older than 4 years and all 3 of them have WDs inside.

So I guess that I'm of no help ....
unless
you want me to send you some strange friends.......

Scott, On the HD's, I have one box that has a WD and although it's never failed in the 5 years in been in service, the whirring noise it makes is rather annoying. It's just been loud from day 1. I have a Samsung in another box and a Quantum Fireball in another. The Quantum is the quietest of the three.

I seem to recall reading on the Dream Machine thread that the Maxtor's are good as well.

But I personally would not buy another WD.
