Paul,

RE: Solaris on Merced

The one thing everyone seems to ignore and never talk about is the fact that HP-UX will run natively on Merced. All current UNIX software running on HP UNIX workstations will run on Merced - unmodified i.e. no need to recompile.

Indeed, HP may actually over take Sun in the UNIX market place due to the lower cost hardware (Intel) and currently supported OS in terms of ready to run application software. Ready to run software for the current version of Solaris on x86 is almost none existant - to think vendors will port to Solaris-Merced is not very realistic. You can include Linux in with Solaris, not very likely vendors will support another flavor of UNIX.
