Sam -
A typical shallow analysis by Barrons. WHY will prices decline over the next year? And in WHICH markets? Lets say that DELL fields a successful line of personal appliances at a price of $499-699. Lets assume they sell like hotcakes. DELL's PC ASPs will decline, but this is incremental business for DELL, which has not done much in the low-price segment before. Lets also assume that DELL has margins on those products similar to their standard desktop products, just at a lower price point. The result is falling ASP but no margin hit, and increased revenues.

This also ignores the increase in ASP across the whole of the business from sales of 8-way and high end enterprise products.

In short, I don't think this applies to the industry as a whole, and it certainly does not apply to DELL.

There are areas where DELL needs to develop product capability but the folks at Barrons will never discover them. They don't have a clue IMHO.

Sam,
Hi!!!
RE: BARRONS
Some people are plain fools...You and everyone on this thread that has followed the stock knows the holes in that statement are as numerous as the ones in Bonnie and Clyde..This idiot talking like that makes me sick...I surely wouldn't discuss statistics with my daughter and tell her what I thought about probabilities...Some folks should just shut up and leave their egos in their closets..
Of course if he'd like to be held accountable for his predictions.. :O) Let's say he can sell pretzels for a living when the stock doubles before this time next year..The revenue growth announcements that DELL has been spilling onto the media these past six months is staggering..and after the past week..DELLCONNECT...I've never been this excited about the future..NEVER!
On the optimistic side I just read a four page article in a newsletter that my father subscribes to (Richard Schmidt's STELLAR STOCK REPORT August 98)...DELL is headlined with all their new internet possibilities...This guy actually knows what he is talking about..He even is talking of DELL hooking up the premier pages... :o) Of course he takes credit for telling the subscribers that they heard it here first... :o)

Best, Kemble
